Guided Forms, opening September 23rd at the Lawson Fenning New York City showroom, features 20 paintings from Los Angeles and Palm Springs based artist Lynda Keeler. These artworks are newly painted in vintage frames. They are a continuation of her ongoing series that is in response to the carved wood, gilded surfaces, polished chrome, unusual shapes and unexpected colors of each frame. The paintings, while continuing to reference landscapes, but are more intuitive and improvisational. This juxtaposition of contemporary artwork and antique frames suggest timelessness and even a bit of surrealism.

Keeler abstractly maps the landscapes and architecture encountered on her walks through Southern California, where rooflines, expansive beaches, asphalt roads, swimming pools, vivid sunrises, and diverse foliage become a shifting vocabulary of color, shape, texture, shadow, and reflection.

These daily explorations act as a doorway into the creative process, with the unique attributes of each frame informing how observation and memory are translated into her paintings.

All the paintings are framed with vintage frames I’ve collected over the years. Typically you start with a painting and then look at the framing to support it. This is going in the opposite direction. The frame is the starting point and the painting responds to that aesthetic constraint.
